I often build furniture for my children for Christmas but because some of them have limited room, I built each of them a Dragon. The dragon is made from Mahogany. I start with a pattern and cut the dragon on the scroll saw.
After the cut I sand each of the 20 pieces so that they have some texture. The pieces are then treated in a bath of sodium hydroxide.
This reacts with the tannins that are in the wood. This turns the mahogany to a deep beautiful red. The dragon is then sprayed with a pre-cat lacquer. Each dragon is numbered, the last being #16.
